The amount of light reflected by the surface of the paint’s finish is its sheen. There are four basic sheens – Flat, Satin, Semi-gloss, and Gloss.

A Flat sheen has non-reflective properties and produces a matte finish that helps to hide surface flaws. Flat sheen paints are recommended for ceilings, dining and living room walls and for bedrooms not occupied by children.

Satin sheens give a soft lustre like an eggshell, and provide a more durable and stain-resistant finish. This type is appropriate for stairways, hallways, family rooms and children’s rooms.

Even more durable, easy to clean, with more stain resistance are Semi-gloss paints. These are generally used in heavy-use areas that require regular cleaning like kitchens and bathrooms. They are also appropriate for wood trim and cabinets.
The hardiest, shiniest, most stain resistant and easiest to clean is the Gloss paint. Although surface flaws will be more noticeable, it is highly suitable for hard use areas such as stairway railings, kitchens and bathrooms.
